Career Development and Global Citizenship

In this course, which is designed for international graduate students, you will gain the leadership and professional skills you need for your career after you complete your studies. You will discuss global citizenship as a way to examine various aspects of the complex, globalized world of the 21st century. Through interactive discussions, you will explore the unique challenges of our time and the forces that shape them and consider how you can take action to improve conditions locally and/or globally. You will learn how cultural and social identity, bias, discrimination, and inequality shape perspectives, including your own, and explore cultural diversity and the challenges of intercultural communication both outside and within the workplace. You will also gain awareness of the work culture in the United States and learn how to present yourself professionally in interviews. You will develop job search tools, such as a LinkedIn profile, resume and cover letter, and practice tailoring these to job postings. Students who complete the course receive a Global Citizenship Certificate endorsed by the U.N. Charter institution, University for Peace.

In this workshop, you will explore the kinds of prejudice, bias, discrimination and inequality associated with race, ethnicity, and cultural difference. You will analyze and discuss videos to reflect on how bias and prejudice affect our interactions and impact society and opportunity.

Gender and Sexuality

In this workshop, you will explore how gender affects our worldview. You will consider how sexism and homophobia affect people’s social status and our interpersonal relationships. You will also discuss how gender identity is linked with inequality in many societies and consider how to work to overcome gender discrimination.

As you consider your own perspectives and biases as a global citizen, you will improve your ability to communicate across cultures and build the intercultural relationships necessary to support global problem solving. You will explore topics such as intercultural communication, multiculturalism, gender inequality, human rights, and sustainability as you learn more about the world and how local, regional, and national issues connect to overarching global conversations. By investigating and engaging with global topics, you will develop knowledge regarding world issues and a deep understanding of social justice. Students who complete the course receive a Global Citizenship Certificate endorsed by the U.N. Charter institution, University for Peace.

As you practice critical analysis, you will gain more self-awareness, moving toward developing an open, reflective attitude about global issues and willingness to take action to promote change. In this workshop, you will explore what globalization. You will explore key causes of globalization, including economic, political and cultural aspects. You will also discuss the ways in which globalization affects people across the world in unequal ways and how this reality relates to global citizenship. In this workshop, you will describe the moral foundations of human rights and why human rights are considered “universal” and “inalienable.” You will learn what most countries agree to be universal human rights.
