In this course, you will practice listening, speaking, reading, and writing. You will learn more academic vocabulary words so you can understand and communicate better. You will read short texts and take notes in different ways. You will write sentences and begin to make simple paragraphs. You will ask and answer questions and say your opinions in conversations. You will learn from a textbook in class and also practice on your own.

Academic English 1

This course helps beginner-level students improve listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. Students increase their vocabulary so that they can understand and communicate better. Students ask and answer questions and give opinions in conversation practice. The course combines in-class practice from classroom texts with online self-study.

Academic English 2

In this course, you will improve your understanding when listening and reading. You will also improve your speaking and writing skills. When you read and listen, you will also take notes so you understand more. You will learn to find the main idea and details in readings and to organize ideas when writing paragraphs. During class, you will learn and practice conversation skills and create simple presentations. You will learn to share more of your own ideas in English. You will learn from a textbook in class and also practice on your own.

Academic English 2

This course is designed to improve low-intermediate students’ listening and reading comprehension and speaking and writing skills. Students read and listen actively while taking notes. They also learn to find the main idea and details in readings and to organize ideas when writing paragraphs. During class, they learn and practice conversation skills and create simple presentations. They move beyond simple expressions to use language with more creativity. The course combines in-class practice from classroom texts with online self-study.

Advanced Graduate Writing and Communication

The demands of graduate programs vary widely based on the professions for which they prepare students. This course will help you familiarize yourself with the conventions of your specific field and learn to produce academic work as a contributing member of that field. You will learn to explain findings verbally and present solutions to problems in persuasive language. In addition, you will participate in frequent discussions and presentations to help you develop the academic and professional communication skills required for group work and group projects in graduate programs.

Conversation Skills and Techniques 1

In this course, you will learn to talk in a conversation. You will ask questions and add comments to start and end conversations. You will also learn to check if you understand and ask questions about information you are not sure about. You will learn how to share information to continue a conversation. You will also learn phrases you can use and practice in many different conversations.

Conversation Skills and Techniques 1

This course enables beginner-level students to engage in conversation with confidence. Students begin learning to use rejoinders, questions, and comments to show interest and understanding as they practice starting, extending, and ending casual conversations in controlled exchanges. They then learn and apply strategic communication skills, such as echoing information to check for understanding, asking clarification questions that target specific information, and responding with details to keep a conversation going. Finally, students apply their skills more spontaneously by engaging in simple, structured discussions on high-interest topics. By learning set expressions through targeted practice and applying them in less and less controlled formats, students develop skills to sustain conversations and more flexibly and naturally respond to conversational shifts.

Conversation Skills and Techniques 2

In this course, you will learn conversation skills that will help you participate more in classroom discussions and groupwork. You will practice specific phrases and questions to ask for and give more information, support ideas with examples, and build on other students’ ideas. You will also learn to help facilitate discussions, keeping the focus on a topic and paraphrasing and synthesizing new ideas as they are developed. You will analyze radio interviews and short articles, and then offer and support your viewpoint while applying various conversation skills. You will practice stating and then revising your ideas so you can build arguments for academic discussions.

Conversation Skills and Techniques 2

This course enables intermediate students to learn conversational speaking and facilitation skills that support effective academic interactions, whether as part of classroom discussions or when completing academic tasks with peers. Students practice specific phrases and questions to ask for and give elaboration and clarification; support ideas with examples; maintain focus in conversations and build on ideas; and paraphrase and synthesize new ideas as they are developed. After analyzing radio interviews and short articles, students offer and support viewpoints while applying various conversation skills. Through numerous activities that require students to formulate and reformulate their ideas, students learn to move from simple sharing of information to the development and evaluation of ideas and arguments.

English Through Art

In this course, you will expand the range and depth of your English proficiency by learning to describe and evaluate the elements of artistic works, including media, line, shape/form, space, color, value and texture, and the principles of art, such as rhythm, balance and proportion. By examining a variety of artworks, you will learn to identify and describe how artists apply these elements and principles to express meaning and feeling. You will develop and expand your aesthetics vocabulary and practice interpreting the meaning of the works and explaining your own reactions to them. Through examination and interpretation of artworks, interactive discussions focused on art criticism, and written analyses, you will apply critical thinking to develop and express judgments based on evidence – skills you can apply in a wide range of academic settings.

English for Academic Purposes 2

In this course, you will improve your university-level writing, critical reading, and classroom discussion skills so you can fully participate in university classes. You will practice relating your ideas to other students’ ideas in discussions and linking ideas in written arguments. You will also practice basic research skills and become familiar with a range of typical academic writing tasks. You will improve your listening comprehension and notetaking skills and increase your active academic vocabulary. In addition to interacting in class, you will complete online reading practice and self-study to review classroom material.

English for Academic Purposes 2

This course is designed to help students improve their university level writing, as well as critical reading and classroom discussion skills. Students practice relating their ideas to those of others in discussions and using cohesive devices to link ideas in systematic written arguments. Students also practice basic research skills, become familiar with a range of typical academic writing tasks, improve their listening comprehension and notetaking skills, and increase their active academic vocabulary. The course combines student-centered, communicative activities with online reading practice and online self-study that reviews and expands on the classroom material. This course is intended to support students as they transition from English language-centered study to content-based instruction.

English for Business 1

In this course, you will learn business-related vocabulary and ideas from topics such as careers, companies, marketing, and business planning. You will improve your general English proficiency through exercises in reading, writing, listening and speaking. You will also develop specific business-related communication skills, such as sharing information, giving and asking for opinions, participating in simple meetings, and writing email and letters summarizing decisions made. You will apply your learning in role plays and discussions about case studies. At the end of the course, you will complete a Capstone project to propose, research, and present a new product.

English for Business 1

This course exposes low-intermediate students to essential business-related vocabulary and concepts from a variety of topics, such as careers, companies, marketing, and business planning. In addition to improving their general English proficiency through exercises in reading, writing, listening and speaking, students develop specific business-related communication skills, including exchanging information, giving and asking for opinions, participating in simple meetings, and writing email and letters summarizing decisions made. Students are challenged to apply their learning in authentic speaking tasks, such as role plays and case study analysis and discussion. Finally, students extend and reinforce their learning by completing a multi-part Capstone project: proposing, researching, and presenting a new product.

English for Business 2

In this course, you will learn essential business-related vocabulary and concepts related to topics such as brands, business travel, finance, management, human resources, international markets, ethics and leadership. You will practice specific business-related communication skills, including managing meetings, networking, negotiating, presenting, and writing email, meeting minutes, reports and summaries. You will also learn phrases and strategies for managing business small talk and networking, including scenarios that demand cross-cultural communication. You will apply what you are learning in role plays and case study analysis and discussion. In addition, you will complete independent research to support business-related projects: presenting a trade show poster promoting a hotel for business travelers, delivering an employee investment training seminar mini-presentation, and negotiating the best business strategy to turn around a struggling company in a meeting simulation.

English for Business 2

Graduate Academic Research

In this course, you will develop critical skills for conducting, discussing, presenting and writing about research related to your field of study. You will gather a collection of field-related articles and analyze the language, rhetorical features and vocabulary to become familiar with academic and professional writing in your field. You will also learn how to identify and evaluate relevant sources, and practice essential skills such as summarizing, paraphrasing, and creating citations. You will practice critical reading and apply your learning in group discussions and group projects, learning to collaborate with peers. You will write and revise multiple drafts of academic texts and practice reporting findings in regular academic presentations.

Graduate Academic Research

This course enables international graduate students to develop critical skills for conducting, discussing, presenting and writing about research related to their field of study. By assembling their own collection of field-related articles and analyzing the language, rhetorical features and lexicon within in, students familiarize themselves with the conventions of academic and professional writing in their field. Students learn how to identify and evaluate relevant sources, and practice essential skills such as summarizing, paraphrasing, and creating citations. Students practice critical reading and apply their learning in group discussions and group projects, developing their capacity to collaborate with peers. The course prepares students to write and revise academic texts through illustrative models and examples, abundant practice, targeted feedback and multiple drafts. Students will also practice reporting findings and analysis in regular academic presentations.

The course integrates grammar as needed and teaches high-frequency academic vocabulary as well as discipline-related vocabulary, based on students’ needs. You may also complete activities designed to strengthen your performance in concurrent or future required courses, as well as activities that address cultural differences in academic expectations.

In this course, you will develop your academic writing skills so you are prepared for first-year university courses. You will learn how to combine ideas that you have read about or experienced into academic essays. You will also increase your ability to create summary-response writing, as well as learn how to write for timed essay exams.

Introduction to Undergraduate Academic Writing

You will learn both how to prepare a well-organized presentation and how to use your voice and body language to connect with listeners. You will analyze video excerpts of speeches, synthesize sources of information, study presentation structure, and improve your pronunciation by practicing scripted speech.
