This course enables international graduate students to develop critical skills for conducting, discussing, presenting and writing about research related to their field of study. By assembling their own collection of field-related articles and analyzing the language, rhetorical features and lexicon within in, students familiarize themselves with the conventions of academic and professional writing in their field. Students learn how to identify and evaluate relevant sources, and practice essential skills such as summarizing, paraphrasing, and creating citations. Students practice critical reading and apply their learning in group discussions and group projects, developing their capacity to collaborate with peers. The course prepares students to write and revise academic texts through illustrative models and examples, abundant practice, targeted feedback and multiple drafts. Students will also practice reporting findings and analysis in regular academic presentations.
