U.S. universities have a strong emphasis on academic integrity, which essentially means: doing your work using your own ideas and your own words without outside help. In this workshop, you will explore what academic integrity looks like and why U.S. universities require high standards of independent work from students. You will learn about the concepts of intellectual property and plagiarism and cultural beliefs about the ownership of ideas. During the workshop, you will discuss practical scenarios to help you understand the university and the professors’ expectations for academic integrity in research and writing, presentations, and group work.

Communicating with Professors

This workshop will help you understand the level of formality expected in student-professor interactions in the U.S. You will learn how to interact during class and how you can meet with your professors during office hours. You will also analyze and practice writing emails that meet university expectations.

How formal should your communication be with your professors? What kind of participation do they expect from you during class? How can you connect with professors and classmates outside of class? What about in writing? This workshop will explain common communication expectations at U.S. universities that might be different from the ones you have learned in your home country. You will learn how to show respect and friendliness to other people in the university community, as well as how to request help and work with others.

In this workshop, you will get guidance for staying on track for graduation. You will review the number of credits you need to complete, how to complete your requirements in a timely fashion, and what types of exams and research assignments are required. You will explore your major requirements and other academic opportunities that can help you succeed academically and in your career. You will begin to create an academic plan you can use as a map for successful graduation in your chosen major.

This workshop, which is tailored to a specific university, uses discipline-specific guidance for staying on track for graduation, including reviewing the number of credits to complete, how to take required modules in a timely fashion, and required exams and research assignments. Students prepare for their major requirements and look at adding other academic opportunities to help improve academic life and support career goals. They create an academic plan to act as a navigation map for successful graduation in their chosen major.

Through online interactive learning activities, students will learn how to communicate with professors and other students in a university environment, exploring the level of formality expected in classroom versus social settings. They will also review group work and presentation skills that will prepare them for academic projects and assignments. Workshops on resume development and time management will help them think about how they want to approach university studies and how they can succeed in a challenging academic environment.

You will consider and analyze how these differ from your educational training and how you can adapt for academic success. You will also learn strategies for communicating with classmates in class.
