Developing Listening Competence

You may find that university study requires much more intensive listening than you have previously experienced. In this workshop, you will learn how to think about your approach to listening so that you can develop the listening strategies you need. You will discover how your brain uses top-down and bottom-up processes to take in information. You will also learn how to isolate and resolve specific listening problems you encounter.

You will learn how listening works in your brain and how you can identify listening problems so that you can fix them. You will also learn how to take notes in different formats in English. By learning how to listen or read for key ideas and then how to write effective notes about them, you will be better prepared to write papers and succeed on exams.
