Academic Advising and Course Registration

Universities require students to complete different combinations of courses to earn a degree. U.S. universities often require undergraduate students to take both general education courses and courses related to their majors. Graduate programs also have some required courses and others that are optional. It can be confusing to understand the requirements and how to create a study plan so that you can graduate on time. This workshop explains how you can work with an academic advisor to identify the courses you need to take. You will also learn how students commonly register for courses so that you are familiar with the basic steps when you learn about your specific university’s process.

Building Your Admissions Portfolio Using the Common App

This workshop introduces students to the process for applying to U.S. universities as a first-year or transfer student. Students learn about the materials they need to build a successful university admissions portfolio, such as transcripts, test scores, extracurricular activities, letters of recommendation, and a personal essay. They also become familiar with the sections of the Common Application, an online platform for university applications.

Obtaining Your Visa

In this workshop, you will learn about different types of student visas and what you need to do to apply for a visa. The workshop will also help you understand what to expect during your visa interviews. For example, typical visa interview topics include: what you want to study, where you hope to attend university, your grades in high school, how you will pay for your education, and what you plan to do after you graduate. You will learn about common types of interview questions so that you can prepare and practice answers to them for a successful interview.

This workshop will introduce you to the U.S. health care system and health insurance. You will learn about the types of health care providers you can visit to get care and how health insurance helps cover the costs for care. You will also learn key vocabulary related to health insurance—claim, premium, deductible, in- and out-of-network, co-insurance, and co-pay—so that you can understand how payments work. Finally, you will explore some strategies for getting health care in an affordable way.
