Career Development and Global Citizenship

This course is designed to help graduate students gain the leadership and professional skills they need for their career after they complete their studies. Students explore global citizenship as a lens through which to examine various aspects of the complex, globalized world of the 21st century. They explore the unique challenges of our time and the forces that shape them and consider how they can take action to improve conditions locally and/or globally. Students learn how cultural and social identity, bias, discrimination, and inequality shape perspectives, including their own, and explore cultural diversity and the challenges of intercultural communication both outside and within the workplace. Students also gain awareness of the work culture in the United States and learn how to present themselves professionally in interviews. They develop job search tools, such as a LinkedIn profile, resume and cover letter, and practice tailoring these to job postings. Students who complete the course receive a Global Citizenship Certificate endorsed by the U.N. Charter institution, University for Peace. Individual lessons from the Global Citizenship Course can also be taught as stand-alone 1-hour workshops.
